Sophie Medals at BUCS

This weekend Sophie represented Newcastle University for the first time at the annual BUCS championship in Sheffield.

Her category was split into 5 pools, with pool winners and runners up progressing to a knock out stage. Sophie won both her opening fights by Ippon to go through as a group winner, which meant that she got an automatic bye in the round of 16.

In the quarter-final Sophie met another group winner, but overcame her with a hip throw in 12 seconds. Her semi-final opponent proved too strong, with Sophie losing by shido. This meant that Sophie had to fight for the bronze, where she faced another tough opponent. The fight went almost full distance with Sophie being a shido down, before landing an Ippon score with de-ashi-barai with just 4 seconds left, to win the bronze medal.

Sophie really enjoyed the event and as a bonus picked up 30 more points towards her 2nd Dan.
