What is Judo?

Judo is a martial art and Olympic sport which involves the use of throws, holds, strangles and armlocks in order to win contests.

This video comes from the IJF (International Judo Federation) Youtube channel, and shows clips from various international-level judo competitions.

But judo isn't just for those who want to compete.  Aside from contest judo, club sessions provide the following benefits:

  • It burns approximately 340 calories per session.

  • It improves balance, flexibility, coordination and fitness.

  • The moves and techniques serve as strength and conditioning exercises.

  • It is a form of self-defence, as well as teaching you to fall properly, reducing the risk of injury in everyday situations.

  • Judo sessions also have a social side, as you meet people and train together.

  • The rules and discipline involved in the sport build confidence, discipline and respect for yourself and others.

The core values of judo are:

  • Fair play

  • Respect

  • Hygiene

  • Self discipline

  • Friendship
